Is the Ruffwear Front Range worth it?

Last tested: July 2026 · by Sami & Diego

The short answer

If your dog pulls or you walk a lot, yes, it earns its price. The Front Range fits well, wears like it will outlast the dog bed, and the front clip gives you real steering on a strong dog. Budget harnesses do the same job for a while; this one keeps doing it.

Why trust two dogs from San Diego?

Two big dogs, two walks a day, and one of them is a professional-grade leash puller when a squirrel enters the conversation. Harnesses at our house do not live gentle display lives; they get sandy, rained on, and yanked. The cheap ones told on themselves within months, which is what sent us up the price ladder.

What does the extra money buy?

Mostly three things. Padding in the right places, so a strong pull spreads across the chest instead of digging in. Hardware and stitching that still look serious after long use, where budget harnesses fray at the strap joints first. And two leash attachment points: an aluminum V-ring on the back for relaxed walks, plus a reinforced webbing loop on the chest for the days when steering matters.

Small touches earn their keep too. There is a pocket under the chest panel for an ID tag, the trim is reflective for early morning walks, and the four adjustment points mean the fit stays put once you dial it in.

What we like (and what we don't)

Works for us

  • Front clip takes the power out of pulling
  • Comfortable enough for all-day wear
  • Build quality that survives sand, rain, and enthusiasm
  • Fit stays put once adjusted

Honest gripes

  • It costs real money next to a basic harness
  • Hand wash only, and white undercoat clings to it
  • Very deep-chested dogs may sit between sizes

Quick questions

Does the front clip really stop pulling?

It does not train the pulling away, but it redirects it. Clipping the leash to the front loop turns a forward lunge into a sideways swivel, which takes the power out of it and makes training the polite walk much easier.

How do I pick a size?

Measure the widest part of the chest behind the front legs and use the size chart on the listing. If your dog lands between sizes, most fluffy or deep-chested dogs do better in the larger one, then snug it down with the four adjustment points.

How do you wash it?

Hand wash with mild soap and air dry. It sheds beach sand and dust fine; what it really collects is white undercoat, which is a lint-roller job.
