Does the KONG Classic live up to the hype?

Last tested: July 2026 · by Sami & Diego

The short answer

Yes, it earns the hype. The KONG Classic is the one toy at our house that has survived years of serious chewing and still gets picked first. Stuff it, freeze it, throw it: it keeps earning its shelf space.

Why trust two dogs from San Diego?

Diego is a Golden Retriever and our lead durability tester. Toys at our house get daily work: fetch in the yard, chew sessions after dinner, and the occasional burial attempt. Most toys retire within a month or two. The KONG is the exception, which is exactly why it gets the first review on this site.

What actually makes it good?

Three things. The natural rubber shrugs off chewing that shreds plush and squeaky toys. The hollow middle turns dinner into a project: stuff it with kibble and a smear of peanut butter and a bored dog becomes a busy dog. And the shape bounces in directions nobody can predict, which Diego considers the height of entertainment.

The freezer trick is the one we recommend most. A stuffed, frozen KONG buys you a solid stretch of quiet during hot afternoons, guests, or hotel stays. Mental work tires a dog out faster than an extra walk, and this is the cheapest mental work there is.

Which size should you get?

Size up if you are between sizes. A KONG that is too small becomes a choking risk for a big dog, and a slightly big one just means more peanut butter capacity. Large suits dogs in the 35 to 85 pound range; medium fits the 15 to 35 pound crowd.

What we like (and what we don't)

Works for us

  • Survives chewing that kills every other toy
  • Stuffing turns it into real mental exercise
  • Freezes beautifully for long quiet sessions
  • Dishwasher makes cleanup a non-event

Honest gripes

  • Buying several sizes for a multi-dog house adds up
  • Dried treat gunk deep inside needs a bottle brush
  • The most extreme power chewers can still rough it up over time

Quick questions

Can a strong chewer destroy a KONG Classic?

Most dogs cannot, which is the whole point. A truly determined power chewer can eventually rough one up, so check it now and then and replace it if chunks start coming loose. For the vast majority of dogs it lasts years.

What do you stuff it with?

Kibble with a smear of peanut butter to hold it in is the everyday move. Freezing the stuffed KONG stretches ten minutes of licking into half an hour of quiet, which is gold on hot afternoons and travel days.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Yes, top rack. A bottle brush handles anything the dishwasher misses inside the cavity.
